Leadership Explained

Dr. Myles Munroe's assertion that "leadership is not position but an influence that is done through inspiration" encapsulates a profound truth about the nature of leadership. This statement challenges the conventional notion that leadership is solely defined by one's title, rank, or position within an organization. Instead, it highlights that genuine leadership transcends these superficial markers and is fundamentally rooted in the ability to inspire and influence others. Here's an elaboration on this concept: At its core, leadership is about guiding, motivating, and enabling individuals or groups to achieve a common goal or vision. While a position or title can provide a platform, it does not automatically grant the qualities necessary to lead effectively. True leadership emerges when someone can inspire and evoke a shared sense of purpose, direction, and commitment among those they lead. Influence, the cornerstone of leadership, is not wielded through coercion ...

Leadership Dimensions

Image
Leadership Dimensions Leadership is a complex and multifaceted concept that has been studied and debated by scholars and practitioners for decades. At its core, leadership is the ability to influence and motivate others towards a common goal or vision. In this essay, we will explore the various dimensions of leadership and what it truly means to be a leader. Leadership is not the same as management . While both roles involve directing and coordinating the actions of others, management is primarily concerned with planning, organizing, and controlling resources to achieve specific objectives. Leadership, on the other hand, is more about inspiring and empowering people to reach their full potential and achieve a shared vision. Leaders often have a more long-term perspective than managers, and are focused on creating a positive culture that encourages innovation, collaboration, and growth. Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all approach . Different situations require different types of lea...

Leadership Meaning

Image
Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose.” – Dr. Myles Egbert Munroe The ingredients that's needed for leadership is found in this definition and to become a leader, you must start from the bottom of the definition and work your way up. First, you discover your purpose. Purpose is why you were born, the reason why you exist and why you were created. Then, you are convicted about your purpose. Once you discover your purpose, you must be convinced about it. It is one thing to discover your purpose and another to be convinced without, conviction you will not be able to envision the future.  Next, you have vision. Once you are convinced about your purpose, you will produce a vision. You will begin to see a preferred future better than where you're at the moment.  Then, your vision will generate passion. Once you discover and  convinced of your ...

Permission Level Permission Level is based entirely on relationship. On the Permission level, people follow because they want to. When you like people and treat them like individuals who have value, you begin to develop influence with them. You develop trust. The environment becomes much more positive—whether at home, on the job, at play, or while volunteering. The agenda for leaders on Level 2 isn’t preserving their position. It’s getting to know their people and figuring out how to get along with them. Leaders find out who their people are. Followers find out who their leaders are. People build solid, lasting relationships. Your  focus as a leader at this level is relationship development with your follower(s) and the way to achieve this is by liking them you can't develop relationship with people you don't like, you need to show your follower that you like them and that you're interested in them, this will automatically get you attracted to them and they will be willing...

Level 1 of leadership (Position)

Image
I know you will definitely be surprised!! If you are hearing this for the first time that " Position is the first level of leadership"  Position is the lowest level of leadership—Infact it is the entry level.  If all that makes you a leader is the position you occupied then you are not a leader yet, because, position doesn't make your a leader.  I told you in our last discussion that leadership is about influencing your follower(s) and  the only influence a positional leader has is that which comes with the title, office or the position he/she occupies, which implies that people follow because they have to and not because they like or want to .  Positional leadership is based on the rights granted by the position and title.  "Nothing is wrong with having a leadership position. Everything is wrong with using position to get people to follow"  because   Position is a poor substitute for influence . People who make it only to Level ...

Introduction:Levels of Leadership

In the next couple of weeks, we will be considering Levels or stages of leadership. As a leader it's important for you to know the level that you're in, in your journey of leadership, that will help you to know the level or stage that you are and consequently give you the opportunity to move to the next level. But before we proceed in this journey let's quickly say something about Leadership today. What's leadership? Scholar's in different dispensation at various times have attempted to define what leadership is, but in the context of this write -up, I will like us to stay with this definition which has been the best ever for me.   " Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration, motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose.”   Dr. Myles Egbert Munroe This definition is loaded with everything there's to know about leadership. Let me take some time to explain this definition, there...

Building trust with those you lead

Let's talk about building trust with those you lead today as a leader. It is important for you as a leader to be trusted by your followers. More and more studies are telling us what we already know: that trust is the most critical currency in leadership and high-performing teams. There are two types of trust – affective trust and cognitive trust. Affective trust  is trust based on emotional bonds and interpersonal relatedness. Another way to look at this is to view it as ‘ warmth ’. It is how someone feels about your intentions. You can build this sort of trust by getting to know your team on a personal level, letting them get to know  you  as a person, being clear about demonstrating your values and showing vulnerability in the right context. Cognitive trust  is trust based on reliability and competence. Another way to look at this is by considering how well someone thinks you will act on your intentions. You can build this trust by delivering on your promises and d...

8 Cornerstones of leadership 5

Image
Authencity is next cornerstone of leadership and this will be our discussion for today. For me,this means embracing my slightly goofy self. It means little things like dressing in what I believed demonstrated my personality (whilst still  being appropriate to the environment and society at large) It means big and important things like understanding and tapping into my strengths, a knack of empathy, listening, creativity and my positive attitudes. It also mean being clear about what I'm not really good at so that I can either delegate or work on improving on them. To cut long story short, I become myself when I find my groove as a leader. When we get tired of trying to be what a good leader should be by looking at others and trying to be like them. Being an authentic leader is being the best version of you Let's consider ways to build up your authencity as a leader. Who are you when you are at your be st I bet you, this answer is closely connected to when you're...

8 Cornerstones of Leadership 4

Image
The 4th cornerstone of Leadership is Collaboration  Many of us carry the image of leaders as the all-knowing superhero archetype. This notion of a leader who stands, commands and protects his or her followers; tells them what to do,how to do it and has all of the answers, all of the time - is unrealistic. I don't know about you,but i feel exhausted and intimidated  just reading that description of  leadership, let alone trying to emulate it! This superhero archetype just won't cut it in the world we lead. Command  and control approaches place too much responsibility on too few leaders. Sure, there are times when "you have to decide" it's appropriate, but it should be less often. In today's volatile and uncertain world, adopting a collaborative leadership style the majority of the time is crucial to leadership success. 4 Ways to develop a collaborative leadership approach  Beware of (and subjugate) your ego Almost a...

Stillness: the 3rd cornerstone of leadership

The third cornerstone of leadership is stillness. Oftentimes, we tend to value action over stillness. As human beings we are predisposed  to get value in leaping from one side to another over stillness or waiting, even when it's obvious that stillness is needed. Stillness is our friend especially when it comes to leadership or playing leadership role. What exactly is stillness in practical terms? -Stillness is when you pause before pressing the reply button when you're angry or triggered to anger. -When we block out time in our calendars regularly for ''thinking" and stick to it. -When a leadership team takes a day out of their busy schedules just to connect and explore how they're currently operating as a team. -Stillness occur when a leader practice mindfulness. -When we adopt the overnight test on an important decision instead of a knee - jerk reaction to a problematic situation. No doubt about the fact that stillness can be an uncomfortable place to resid...

8 cornerstones of Leadership 2

Listening: the second cornerstone ''If you want to be all round leader, just become an awesome listener'' If you've ever been the recipient of someone giving you their full, undivided attention, you'll know what a gift this can be. Especially when  the person giving you their attention is your superior/leader or someone who has influence over you life/career success. But, unfortunately today, this act of giving another person full attention during conversation has become a very scarce commodity among us. 4 Reason why giving people your full attention is worth it's weight in gold 1.We hear what's being said.It seems obvious, but if we are preoccupied with checking our phone, glancing at emails, or if our eyes are constantly skirting the room,we can miss subtle but vital clues/information.We may also not fully comprehend what the other person is trying to communicate. 2. Paying full attention to people makes them feel heard and valued. I don...

8 conerstones of Leadership

Image
8 Cornerstones of Leadership Introduction Permit me to start with this statement Being a leader can be incredibly rewarding.    It can also be tough and bewildering  If you sometimes feel a little overwhelmed and greatly stressed up with the ever increasing demands of leadership, or you're confused about what great leadership looks like or how to cultivate it, i want to assure you that you're not alone. One of the reasons for this is because many of the leadership theories and practices that was developed in the last 5 decades are now outdated. They're no longer applicable to our present world today in which we lead. Technology, especially social media, has really increased global connectedness, the growing volatility and complexity that organisations and individuals are experiencing - not to mention the sheer pace of change - shows that leadership is now more challenging than ever before. B...

You don't have a vision until your followers can see

Image
Vision in leadership is important. We all know it. But, oftentimes, we can't really paint the picture of what that vision looks like in practice. Most times vision is couched in a goal such as growing revenue by 10% in 2020. While goals are very important, that's not what I'm talking about here. What I'm talking about here now is a vision that's so clear to the extent that you can visualise it-and so everyone around you. That's what vision is all about. It's not a coincidence that vision and visualise have the same linguistic origin- because that's what vision is meant to do. Creating a vision that aligns your team or followers as the case may be takes a lot of thought.it takes reflection,it takes getting specific. Because if you're not specific, you'll be scattered and consequently, your team or followers may not know where you are going and you won't be able to recognise success when you see it. Without specifics you're likely to ...
