Permission Level Permission Level is based entirely on relationship. On the Permission level, people follow because they want to. When you like people and treat them like individuals who have value, you begin to develop influence with them. You develop trust. The environment becomes much more positive—whether at home, on the job, at play, or while volunteering. The agenda for leaders on Level 2 isn’t preserving their position. It’s getting to know their people and figuring out how to get along with them. Leaders find out who their people are. Followers find out who their leaders are. People build solid, lasting relationships. Your  focus as a leader at this level is relationship development with your follower(s) and the way to achieve this is by liking them you can't develop relationship with people you don't like, you need to show your follower that you like them and that you're interested in them, this will automatically get you attracted to them and they will be willing...

Level 1 of leadership (Position)

Image
I know you will definitely be surprised!! If you are hearing this for the first time that " Position is the first level of leadership"  Position is the lowest level of leadership—Infact it is the entry level.  If all that makes you a leader is the position you occupied then you are not a leader yet, because, position doesn't make your a leader.  I told you in our last discussion that leadership is about influencing your follower(s) and  the only influence a positional leader has is that which comes with the title, office or the position he/she occupies, which implies that people follow because they have to and not because they like or want to .  Positional leadership is based on the rights granted by the position and title.  "Nothing is wrong with having a leadership position. Everything is wrong with using position to get people to follow"  because   Position is a poor substitute for influence . People who make it only to Level ...

Introduction:Levels of Leadership

In the next couple of weeks, we will be considering Levels or stages of leadership. As a leader it's important for you to know the level that you're in, in your journey of leadership, that will help you to know the level or stage that you are and consequently give you the opportunity to move to the next level. But before we proceed in this journey let's quickly say something about Leadership today. What's leadership? Scholar's in different dispensation at various times have attempted to define what leadership is, but in the context of this write -up, I will like us to stay with this definition which has been the best ever for me.   " Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration, motivated by passion, generated by vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose.”   Dr. Myles Egbert Munroe This definition is loaded with everything there's to know about leadership. Let me take some time to explain this definition, there...

Building trust with those you lead

Let's talk about building trust with those you lead today as a leader. It is important for you as a leader to be trusted by your followers. More and more studies are telling us what we already know: that trust is the most critical currency in leadership and high-performing teams. There are two types of trust – affective trust and cognitive trust. Affective trust  is trust based on emotional bonds and interpersonal relatedness. Another way to look at this is to view it as ‘ warmth ’. It is how someone feels about your intentions. You can build this sort of trust by getting to know your team on a personal level, letting them get to know  you  as a person, being clear about demonstrating your values and showing vulnerability in the right context. Cognitive trust  is trust based on reliability and competence. Another way to look at this is by considering how well someone thinks you will act on your intentions. You can build this trust by delivering on your promises and d...

8 Cornerstones of leadership 5

Authencity is next cornerstone of leadership and this will be our discussion for today. For me,this means embracing my slightly goofy self. It means little things like dressing in what I believed demonstrated my personality (whilst still  being appropriate to the environment and society at large) It means big and important things like understanding and tapping into my strengths, a knack of empathy, listening, creativity and my positive attitudes. It also mean being clear about what I'm not really good at so that I can either delegate or work on improving on them. To cut long story short, I become myself when I find my groove as a leader. When we get tired of trying to be what a good leader should be by looking at others and trying to be like them. Being an authentic leader is being the best version of you Let's consider ways to build up your authencity as a leader. Who are you when you are at your be st I bet you, this answer is closely connected to when you're...

8 Cornerstones of Leadership 4

The 4th cornerstone of Leadership is Collaboration  Many of us carry the image of leaders as the all-knowing superhero archetype. This notion of a leader who stands, commands and protects his or her followers; tells them what to do,how to do it and has all of the answers, all of the time - is unrealistic. I don't know about you,but i feel exhausted and intimidated  just reading that description of  leadership, let alone trying to emulate it! This superhero archetype just won't cut it in the world we lead. Command  and control approaches place too much responsibility on too few leaders. Sure, there are times when "you have to decide" it's appropriate, but it should be less often. In today's volatile and uncertain world, adopting a collaborative leadership style the majority of the time is crucial to leadership success. 4 Ways to develop a collaborative leadership approach  Beware of (and subjugate) your ego Almost a...
